The Science of Scratching.
Necessary, not naughty.
Why Cats Scratch
(It’s Not Naughty — It’s Neurology)
A well-designed scratching surface supports full-body extension. When a cat stretches forward into resistance, the thoracolumbar spine lengthens and stabilising muscles engage. This is especially important for indoor cats who may have fewer opportunities for natural movement.
Claw health also depends on proper resistance. High-density corrugated cardboard offers enough texture to safely shed old claw layers without damaging the nail bed.
Over time, consistent access to appropriate scratch surfaces can support posture, flexibility, and muscular balance.
Why Shape Matters
Most traditional scratchers are vertical posts. While some cats prefer this, many instinctively scratch along the ground.
A low, curved surface allows the cat to extend fully while keeping all four paws grounded. This engages the core, supports spinal alignment, and mirrors natural behaviours seen in outdoor environments.
The gentle curve also invites circling and settling, allowing scratching to flow naturally into rest.
After scratching, many cats immediately lie down. This is not random.
Scratching activates muscles and releases tension. Once that cycle completes, the nervous system shifts toward a calmer state, encouraging rest. It is a complete behavioural sequence.
By combining scratch and sleep in one design, PAUWZ supports this uninterrupted rhythm. Scratch. Stretch. Circle. Settle. Sleep.
Materials With Purpose
We use high-density corrugated cardboard chosen specifically for its durability and tactile resistance.
Cardboard also retains warmth, creating a naturally insulated surface that cats are drawn to. It feels secure and contained without being enclosed.
All materials are non-toxic and pet-safe, designed to support instinct while sitting beautifully within a considered home.
